Your Guide to Local Services in Santiago de Chile

Getting around a bustling and dynamic metropolis like Santiago de Chile might seem a bit daunting at first, but once you get the hang of how things work, you will be navigating the capital like a true local. The city’s modern infrastructure is designed to make your stay smooth, safe, and stress-free.

The Santiago Metro is the absolute pride of the city: it is fast, clean, safe, and whisks you across the main districts in no time. It is easily the best way to beat the peak-hour traffic. To ride the Metro and the micros (the local buses), you must buy a contactless smart card called the tarjeta Bip!. You can purchase and top up your card at any Metro station. Please note that cash is not accepted on buses.

For shorter trips or late-night travel, ride-sharing apps like Uber operate widely, efficiently, and safely. You can also hail traditional black-and-yellow taxis, but always ensure the driver switches on the taximeter. If you prefer two wheels, Santiago’s network of cycle lanes has expanded brilliantly, and there are very handy public bike-sharing schemes available in central areas.

When it comes to healthcare, Santiago boasts exceptional standards. In case of any medical emergencies, private clinics in Providencia, Las Condes, and Vitacura offer world-class facilities and have experience dealing with international visitors. However, always travel with comprehensive medical insurance to cover any unexpected costs.

For daily essentials, you will find large supermarket chains and cosy neighbourhood grocery stores on almost every block. For currency exchange, avoid airport counters and head to the official exchange houses in the city centre (along Agustinas street) or Providencia (near Pedro de Valdivia), where you will find much better rates. Internet connectivity is excellent, with free Wi-Fi readily available in most cafés and restaurants to keep you connected throughout your journey.
