Travel to Santiago de Chile
by Train and Metro
Travelling to or getting around Santiago de Chile by train and metro is one of the most efficient, comfortable, and sustainable options. While long-distance passenger rail in Chile is more limited compared to other countries, the commuter and regional rail network operated by EFE (Empresa de los Ferrocarriles del Estado) and the modern Santiago Metro network make the capital the primary hub for rail transport in the country.
The main intercity service is the Tren Chillán (featuring modern high-speed BMU trains), connecting Santiago with Chillán and southern cities in approximately 3 hours and 40 minutes. For daily commuter routes, the Tren Rancagua and Tren Nos offer fast and frequent connections between central Santiago and the southern suburbs as well as the O'Higgins region. Santiago Central Station
(Estación Central / Alameda)
(Santiago’s Main Railway Station – Estación Central)
Santiago’s Estación Central (officially Alameda Station) is the largest and most historic railway terminal in the country. Located on Avenida Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins (Alameda), it serves as the natural hub for all regional and long-distance passenger train travel heading south.
Whether you are travelling on suburban commuter routes (Tren Nos or Tren Rancagua) or regional services like Tren Chillán, your train will arrive at or depart from Estación Central.
The station is directly connected to Santiago Metro Line 1 (Estación Central station). Major intercity bus terminals (Terminal San Borja and Terminal Alameda) are located right next door, making seamless connections across the country extremely convenient.
Going to the Airport?
From Estación Central, you can take Metro Line 1 to Pajaritos or Los Héroes stations, where express airport buses (Centropuerto and TurBus) depart directly for Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport (SCL).
Services and Amenities
Inside and adjacent to the station complex (including the Mall Paseo Arauco Estación), you will find ticket counters, ATMs, luggage storage, shopping facilities, supermarkets, food courts, restaurants, and cafés.
